Other issues have been addressed by other reviews, so I'll jump to what stands out when you open this book: it's a series of bullet lists. It reads more like an outline than a book, with little or no explanation of complex ideas. Motivational interviewing, a useful skill, gets four bullet points while psychoanalysis gets three pages (also consisting of bullet points).The entire somatic nervous system is described in one sentence: "conveys information from the CNS to skeletal muscles; responsible for voluntary movement." It doesn't even mention the sensory function of the somatic nervous system... Apparently physical sensations like heat, cold, and pain are viewed as unimportant?Glial cells are described in a way neuroscience abandoned 20 years ago: "structures that form the myelin sheath around axons and provide protection and support." Granted, they include the word protection, so they're not entirely out of date, but glial cells are known to be involved in a wide range of processes and function along side neurons in both health and disease. Astrocytes (a type of glia) are involved in controlling blood flow in the brain and can communicate not only with each other but can cause neurons to fire (see "calcium waves").Maybe none of this is important for the exam, but the book would be a lot more helpful if the concepts were fleshed out to help with deep processing of the information. As it is, it feels like a labor in rote memorization, which is an inefficient method of learning an entire textbook.
This review is based on the exam I took for 2017. They change the exam so frequently that it is possible some books will be more useful than others in different years. This book may have been useful in 2016? I found the questions in the back to be very useful towards the exam, but theres only 50-75 of them. The nursing ethics, quality, and policy sections are a few pages long, but thats the majority of the exam. So I felt the majority of the information in the book had nothing to do with the exam. I give it two starts because 15% of the entire book was probably useful.
I agree with other reviews about some of the error in the manual.That being said this is the best manual on the market for PMHNP boards.I and many of my classmates used only this manual to study for the boards and passed it!
I reviewed this book over a weekend and did all the questions from the Poket Prep mobile app. Between the two, I passed without difficulty. The publisher also publishes the test, seems it would make sense to stick with this book when studying.
Just took the exam, and this was the least helpful of all the resources I used to study (Pocket Prep PMHNP Exam App, ANCC prep Questions, and school materials). The book has a lot of information that you likely have in other sources from school, but doesn't have enough detailed information to really learn from. Its mostly simple lists like others have mentioned. And has a lot of typos, don't think I've ever read a book with so many, certainly not a text book.For the price there are better sources of information to study for the test.

Very thorough. Particularly focused on ANCC certification examination.Easy to follow.
Ok using this as I go through PMHNP school and yes really helping to get in the mindset of how to do things and what to look out for in patients.
