I loved the Japan Lonely Planet book, so thought this would be a safe bet. Big mistake. This book is really poorly edited; several of the listed attractions/sights didn't appear in their corresponding maps, or appeared in the map of a completely different section. Furthermore, the Taipei chapter is horribly, horribly organized. Normally, Lonely Planet books are organized by location, and then by Sights, Nightlife, Food, etc., making it easy to plan trips to each location. However, the Taipei chapter is organized by Sights, Nightlife, Food, etc. and then subdivided by location. What this means is, if you want to find stuff to do in North Taipei, you're going to have to flip to six different chapters, find the right reference to the location, and write it down. It makes it such a chore, and if you're getting this book for Taipei in particular, turn away now.Terrible editing, terrible organization, terrible product.
We've been in Taipei now for 6 weeks with this as the only guide book we brought - I wish there had been other options. There's a lot in this city the guide book misses, and some it has flat out wrong. We've gone to some of the places that are highly recommended (like the Miniature Museum and Bopiliao) and wondered why they were so highly regarded and found other places (like the powerful AMA Museum) that are great and not even mentioned. The organization of Taipei in this book, while it's set up how the locals do it, by city regions, is very confusing to a non-local. I got the impression that it was written by a gay bicyclist because that seemed to be the bulk of the information. But even that wasn't the best - my husband, an avid biker, looked up the recommended websites for bike routes, and none of them were working. Hopefully they'll make this guide better - but for now, I think it's one of the few out there, so you're kind of stuck.
I picked up this guidebook for a two week trip in November to Taiwan. I used it to not only plan my time in Taipei, but also plan the first week, which was spent on the southern and eastern coasts (Kenting and Hualien). The organization of the book into various regions was extremely helpful for planning purposes as I wanted to make sure I saw culturally important things and not just touristy things. The fact that it listed The nearest MRT stop to each location in Taipei was also super useful as I could plan my trip around walking and using my Easycard. The information about exchanging money and cell phone carriers proved essential as well. Taiwan has really good cell phone coverage in my experience, with speeds on my iPhone 6 exceeding what I get on my iPhone Xs in Seattle. This made it really easy to consult the various favorited/bookmarked places I entered into Google maps when I was stateside.
Happy to get a guide book to my native land to see what off-the-beaten path sites I can discover.Disappointed that it only covers the popular places and some cities are not mentioned at all.I suppose with any travel guide, it will be limited to what a first time visitor needs to see.
Excellent guide to Taiwan and its cities. Well written and researched, and very helpful on the ground for sightseeing and moving around. Some of the shopping recommendations were a little off the mark. Best shopping experience was at Hayashi at night in Tainan; not to be missed for the shopping and seeing the restored building at night!
Phenomenal book. Helped me a lot in my travels. I also suggest getting lonely planet's mandarin handbook if you need help with some basic Mandarin phrases. Find Taiwanese Mandarin materials if you want to study further. This book has some language help, enough to get by for sure.
Tons of great information and tips to be found for your next travel destination! My family has a lot of locations and options bookmarked for our upcoming trip to Taiwan.
It helped us out on our trip. Nice guide and fairly complete
