Brendon Powell Smith’s singular gift in creating his LEGO-inspired masterpieces is the illusion of movement in each static frame. His books feel like a stop-motion animation film. There is a central figure in every single one of Smith’s panels identified both in the narration and the imagery. That focus gives the story its narrative flow. That main figure is supported by richly detailed scenes – detailed in terms of being descriptive but not necessarily busy or cluttered. Smith’s ability to both focus the reader and have them take in a more complex scene without overwhelming them is remarkable.For instance, Chapter 13 details the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan by John Hinkley. Actress and Yale student Jodie Foster and a friend are walking toward the viewer in the foreground (Pg. 227.) The friend is looking over her shoulder. Your eye follows her gaze to see Hinkley stalking the pair in the background. Meanwhile, slightly blurred images of a carefree college campus – a game of Frisbee, other walkers – fill the margins of the frame. It’s a vignette within a bigger story all done in LEGO bricks. Smith puts you in this scene which looks normal but feels menacing while foreshadowing Hinkley’s later actions.His staging and perspective complement the text with each paragraph also a beautiful crafted story - each chapter is footnoted. I was interested to learn that Samuel Byck planned to crash a commercial flight into the White House to kill President Nixon (Pg. 189) while Osama bin Laden tried to bomb President Clinton while he was on a trip to the Philippines (Pgs. 242-243). These events eerily preceeded 9-11 and the bombings of the Twin Towers by passenger jets.I really enjoy Smith’s work and we own several of his adult and children's works. I highly recommend his interpretation of historical events and literature through this medium.
This book is a unique and spectacular way to get your child into history. My 8-year-old daughter saw it at school and asked for it for Christmas because she thought it was so interesting. Not only did she learn a lot of history, but she learned a lot about presidents and people. She read it cover to cover as soon as she got it, and started it over again when she finished.NOTE: This book is about *assassinations.* It can be graphic and you may get some surprising questions from your kids that you might not be comfortable answering. If you are sheltering your kids from violence or are uncomfortable with your children asking questions about adult topics, this may not be the book for you. I, personally, loved the conversations and discussions this book sparked between me and my kids, and encourage other adults to give this book a chance.
Bought for my Lego & president obsessed son. No age/content info on target audience for this book (kids? adults?) --there is some information in it that isn't appropriate for kids. I blacked it out so my son can continue to enjoy the other 99% of this neat book! Ordering "Revolution!" next!
I can't believe I'm excited about a book on assassinations, but there you go! What a great way for my kids to learn history. Even though it's told in Lego form, it isn't presented in a light-hearted manner. Very well done!

This book includes attempted assasinations as well, and is quite dense. I won President's Day when I brought this to a President's Day celebration/feast. This book pairs well with a First Lady's cookbook, fyi.
