This is a great text. Quick to read. Lots of examples of what to do and what not to do. A great resource.
I am a PhD statistician who has spent decades analyzing questionnaire data and I learned things from this book. Rather than being a book on statistics and psychometrics (i.e., the mathematical methods for determining the "right" number of questions to include) this book is on the psychology of developing good questionnaires. It covers issues like the impact of questionnaire wording, getting responses to sensitive questions and how to get the answers you are seeking. As such, it fills a big gap in the usual statistics books.While not mathematically rigorous in the slightest, this is not a light and fluffy read. There is a ton of theory tied to experimental and social psychology papers. Actually, this took me a few weeks to read it because the amount of theory and also the authors are at times long winded.If you are in the social sciences or a statistician who wants to learn about questionnaire development this is a must read. If you are in any other applied field (like marketing) this will be very valuable.
I got this book because our department is beginning to introduce customer feedback surveys into our service delivery model in an effort to improve our customer satisfaction. None of us know anything about surveys, so we started out with very general questions and just weren't getting the feedback that we wanted to help us adjust our service. When I saw this offered, I ordered it right away.As another reviewer noted, this isn't a masters in survey generation. But what the author does is give you a place to start. You get the basics of how to construct good questions that will get you the feedback you need, and avoid annoying the customer or generating feedback that just doesn't mean anything.I think this deserves five stars - just remember that it's an introduction to the topic, and that people spend years learning to do this well. This will get you started.
I'm not a professional survey maker so take my comments with a grain of salt.I enjoyed reading the book as a general reader, especially the examples of bad survey questions and examples of how a minor change in a question can lead to very different results.Strictly as an amateur, I sometimes send around surveys to members of the three charitable organizations I donate time and money to in order to get a sense of what the membership is interested in.My hope is that my questions will lead to more accurate responses in the future after studying some of the examples in this interesting and well written book.Robert C. In my work I deal with a good many folks who've had lots of graduate-level work in research design. I find sometimes they (and I) suffer from the 'curse of knowledge': Knowing so much that we get in our own way. This book is great for beginners but also useful for those who may have been in the weeds too long. This covers the essentials of writing sound items, but also addresses things that may fall by the wayside, particularly factors that may make the difference in whether a respondent completes the survey: Taking a design thinking approach, attending to issues like accessibility and reading comprehension, and designing for mobile users. Overall an excellent reference text for any researcher's --or casual survey-creator's - shelf.
This is a good basic book about survey designs. It would be good for someone who is new to survey design and it does a good job of describing some of the pitfalls that can happen with surveys; in particular, the examples of bad survey question is great and gives an honest overview of when well-intentioned surveys go bad. It's great for companies that want to start surveying or for beginning undergrad students creating surveys. However, I think it is a rather basic book, and doesn't have enough on analysis and interpretation of surveys. So, I do not think it is comprehensive enough for someone who will be doing a lot of survey design or using surveys for research (such as graduate students).
