His deep knowledge of art and his acute observations of detail connect the reader to the vast history of painting and sculpture and provide intelligent and thought-provoking critiques, revealing a precision and articulate expression rarely found in art criticism today. A MUST read for all serious art aficionados, artists, museum and gallery directors, and collectors.
Beautifully designed and produced by the Eakins Press. I might wish for a few more illustrations, but those that do appear have been well chosen and placed to support Mr. Perl's essays. Every art lover should be conversant with his arguments for the need to have life in art.

They are mainly about the creators and displayers (museums and art galleries) of modern art in both Europe and America, and mainly--although not exclusively--drawn from the experience of New York City.I think the author, Jed Perl, has a bright and sincere eye backed up by a tremendous breadth of historical knowledge.As an aside, I enjoyed the actual pages of this book; the first-rate paper used by the publisher made the reading experience a pleasure.

With this book, Jed Perl gives voice to a growing number of people for whom there is still essential value in celebrating the magicians and unveiling the charlatans. This is a great read!
